Operation

Day-to-day operation, sensor network management, and firmware updates for Haltian Gateway XS

Normal Operation

Startup Sequence

Gateway boot process takes approximately 60–90 seconds:

  1. Power On (0-5 seconds)

    • Hardware initialization
    • Self-test procedures
  2. Network Initialization (5-30 seconds)

    • Network interfaces activate
    • Cellular registration
  3. Cloud Connection (30-60 seconds)

    • TLS connection establishment
    • Authentication and registration
    • NTP synchronization
  4. Wirepas Mesh Start (60-90 seconds)

    • 2.4 GHz radio initialization
    • Network scanning
    • Sink role activation

Monitoring via Haltian Studio

Check gateway status at any time:

  1. Log in to Haltian Studio
  2. Navigate to Devices → Gateways
  3. Key indicators:
    • Status: Online / Offline
    • Last Seen: Timestamp of last communication
    • Cellular Signal: RSSI and RSRP values (if using LTE)
    • Connected Sensors: Number of sensors routing through this gateway
    • Firmware Version: Current installed version

Sensor Network Management

Network Formation

Gateway XS includes Wirepas Mesh firmware by default and operates as a sink that connects the sensor network to Haltian IoT.

  1. The gateway activates its Wirepas sink role after boot
  2. Sensors join the configured Wirepas Mesh network automatically
  3. Wirepas establishes routes as sensors discover neighboring devices and available gateway sinks
  4. Intermediate sensors relay messages when a direct route to a gateway is not available

No manual sensor-to-gateway assignment is required. In deployments with multiple gateways, routes can change automatically as network conditions change.

Typical formation time: 15–30 minutes for a full mesh network.

Optimal Gateway Placement

  • Coverage range: Up to 25 m per hop indoors, depending on the environment
  • Central position: Place gateway centrally relative to sensor locations
  • Obstacles: Minimize thick concrete walls and metal barriers between gateway and sensors
  • Antenna orientation: Vertical positioning generally provides best coverage
  • Multiple gateways: For large deployments, overlap coverage by 20–30%

Sensor Capacity

The number of sensors per gateway depends on the message rate and deployment density. Contact Haltian for guidance on capacity planning for your specific use case.

Firmware Updates

Firmware updates are managed and delivered automatically by Haltian:

  • Updates are applied automatically when available
  • The gateway may reboot during the update process
  • No customer action is required to initiate updates
  • Verify the current firmware version in Haltian Studio after an update

Power Management

  • The gateway operates continuously once powered on
  • No sleep modes or scheduled power-off features
  • If power is interrupted, the gateway boots automatically when power is restored
  • No data is lost during a power cycle — the gateway reconnects and resumes operation
