Keyword Best Practices

Naming Conventions

  • Be descriptive: “Temperature Sensor” vs. “Temp”
  • Use categories: Prefix with category (e.g., “Type: Motion”, “Location: North Wing”)
  • Stay consistent: Use the same terminology across keywords
  • Avoid duplicates: Check existing keywords before creating new ones

Common Keyword Categories

  • Temperature Sensor
  • Motion Detector
  • CO2 Sensor
  • Gateway

Functional Group:

  • HVAC System
  • Security System
  • Lighting Control
  • Environmental Monitoring

Location:

  • North Wing
  • South Wing
  • Floor 3

Keyword Organization

  • Limit keywords per device (3-7 is usually sufficient)
  • Create a keyword taxonomy before large deployments
  • Document your keyword strategy
  • Periodically review and clean up unused keywords
  • Use colors to visually distinguish keyword categories

Keyword Colors

Assign colors to keywords for visual identification:

  • Functional significance: Red for critical systems, green for environmental
  • Location-based: Different colors per building or floor
  • Status indicators: Yellow for testing, blue for production
  • Custom scheme: Create your own color coding system

Searching by Keywords

Once keywords are assigned:

  • Use Inventory by Keywords to browse devices by keyword
  • Filter device lists by keyword
  • Export device lists filtered by keyword
  • Create device groups based on keywords
