Physical Installation
Desktop Placement
For temporary or portable deployments:
Choose Location
- Central location relative to sensors
- Good cellular signal (check signal strength after power-on)
- Stable, level surface
- Away from heat sources
Position Gateway
- Place on desktop or shelf
- Ensure LEDs visible for status monitoring
- Route USB cable safely (avoid trip hazard)
- Allow 5cm clearance on all sides for ventilation
Environmental Considerations:
- Temperature: 0-40°C operating range
- Humidity: 8-90% RH non-condensing
- Avoid: Direct sunlight, heat sources, liquids
- Ventilation: Ensure airflow around unit
Wall Mounting
For permanent installations:
Select Mounting Location
- Consider cellular signal strength (test first with desktop placement)
- Central position relative to sensor coverage area
- Height: 1-2m above floor optimal for mesh network
- Near power outlet to minimize cable length
Mark Mounting Points
- Use gateway mounting holes as template
- Ensure level mounting
- Check for hidden wiring/pipes before drilling
Install Mounting Hardware
- Use appropriate wall anchors for wall type:
- Drywall: Plastic anchors or toggle bolts
- Concrete: Concrete anchors
- Wood: Wood screws directly
- Screw size: M4 or similar
- Leave 2-3mm gap for mounting slots
- Use appropriate wall anchors for wall type:
Mount Gateway
- Align mounting slots with screws
- Slide gateway down to secure
- Verify stable mounting before releasing
Connect Power
- Route micro USB cable neatly
- Use cable clips to secure along wall if desired
- Connect to power adapter and outlet
Initial Startup

Verify Cellular Connection
Check Cellular LED
- Should be solid after 30-60 seconds
- If blinking continuously after 5 minutes, see Troubleshooting
Monitor Signal Strength
- Access Haltian IoT Studio
- Navigate to gateway device
- Check cellular signal metrics:
- RSSI > -70 dBm (good)
- RSRP > -90 dBm (good)
- RSRQ > -10 dB (good)
Optimize Position if Needed
- If signal poor, try different locations
- Higher elevation often improves cellular reception
- Move away from metal barriers
- Test near windows for better signal
Verify Cloud Connection
Access Haltian IoT Studio
- Log in to your Haltian IoT account
- Navigate to Devices → Gateways
Locate Gateway
- Gateway should appear automatically after cloud connection
- UUID displayed on gateway label
- Note gateway UUID for identification
Verify Status
- Status: Online
- Last Seen: Recent timestamp (within 1 minute)
- Firmware Version: Current version displayed
- Cellular Connection: Active
Network Configuration
Automatic Configuration
Default behavior (recommended):
- Gateway uses pre-configured SIM card
- Cellular connection established automatically

- No user configuration required
Manual Configuration
Only if using non-standard SIM card:
Access Gateway Configuration
- Via Haltian IoT Studio (gateway must be online first via Ethernet/WiFi)
- Or via local console access (advanced users)
Configure Cellular Settings
APN: carrier.apn.endpoint Username: (if required by carrier) Password: (if required by carrier) Authentication: PAP / CHAP / NoneApply Configuration
- Save settings
- Gateway reboots
- Cellular connection established with new settings
Post-Installation Checklist

Sensor Deployment
After gateway installation:
Position Sensors
- Within 5-25m of gateway (typical indoor range)
- Closer for first sensors (direct connection)
- Extended range via multi-hop as network grows
Power On Sensors
- Sensors discover gateway automatically
- Mesh network forms within 15-30 minutes
- No sensor configuration needed for standard deployments
Verify Sensor Connection
- Check Haltian IoT Studio
- Sensors appear under gateway
- Data messages start flowing
For detailed sensor deployment, see Operation Guide.
Optimal Placement Guidelines
Cellular Signal Optimization
Best Practices:
- Higher is Better: 1-2m above floor improves cellular reception
- Near Windows: Often provides better signal than interior locations
- Avoid Basements: Underground locations have poor cellular coverage
- Metal Barriers: Minimize metal walls/ceilings between gateway and cell tower
- Concrete: Thick concrete weakens signals, position near openings
Test Before Permanent Installation:
- Power on gateway in desired location
- Wait 2-3 minutes for cellular connection
- Check signal strength in Studio
- Move and retest if signal poor
- Mount permanently once optimal location found
Mesh Network Optimization
For Best Sensor Coverage:
- Central Location: Position gateway centrally relative to sensor coverage area
- Line of Sight: Minimize obstacles between gateway and sensors
- Multi-Hop Support: Sensors can relay through other sensors (mesh network)
- Overlap: Deploy multiple gateways with 20-30% coverage overlap for large areas
Environmental Considerations
- Temperature: Keep within 0-40°C operating range
- Humidity: 8-90% RH, avoid condensation
- Ventilation: 5cm clearance on all sides
- Avoid: Direct sunlight, heat sources, excessive moisture
- Indoor Only: IP40 rating, not suitable for outdoor use
